A biographical approach

A biographical approach
The redesign of the house in Tulln puts the life of Egon Schiele in the centre of attention. As a result, this museum gem becomes a meaningful addition to the large museums that pay attention to the work of the artist. The museum is also the starting point for an exploration of the habitats of the artist. This exploration takes us back about 50 years when an unusual woman approached the work of Egon Schiele in an, at the time, unusual way.

By using conversations with contemporaries of Alessandra Comini as its basis, the Egon Schiele Museum in Tulln takes a completely new approach to being the biographical centre of the artist. Comini’s audio interviews from the 1960’s are unique originals which are exclusively available to the Egon Schule Museum in Tulln. The exhibition traces the biography of Egon Schiele while letting people testify who accompanied the artist or fundamentally studied his work.

Schiele spent almost all his life between Lower Austria and Vienna. The intensity with which he internalised the country around Vienna in his work is impressive. In the centre of this Schiele cosmos lies his birthplace Tulln where the artist spent more than a third of his life. Neulengbach, Krems, Klosterneuburg and Vienna were easy to reach for excursions thanks to the ground-breaking innovation of the railway.

Today, visitors can easily explore the landscapes that conditioned Schiele’s wonderful work from here. This makes it possible to have a holistic view of the biography and the work of the artist, considering the relationship between art and life.

Anton Peschka. Freund, Schwager, Künstler und Sammler

Since 2023, there has been a small presentation area on the second floor of the museum that combines works from Egon Schiele's circle with the results of the latest research. In the 2025 season, the exhibition is dedicated to Egon Schiele's artist friend and brother-in-law Anton Peschka, and interviews with Elisabeth Leopold that have never been published before will be on display in her memory. There will also be the opportunity to take part in a special VR experience in 2025:

Anton Peschka. Friend, brother-in-law, artist and collector

Hardly anyone in Egon Schiele's circle has such multifaceted connections to the artist of the century as Schiele's brother-in-law, who was a close friend of Schiele from his student days until his death. As an artist and heir to the estate of his wife Gerti (Egon Schiele's younger sister), Anton Peschka was very close to his friend's work, drew and painted in Schiele's style, completed his works and is still suspected of having forged “Schieles”. The exhibition brings together works by the artist friend and brother-in-law that date back to Schiele's time and still pose a mystery today.

Egon Schiele. A personal encounter

The new VR experience “Egon Schiele. A Personal Encounter” offers visitors the opportunity to enter into a conversation with Egon Schiele and influence the plot of a feature film that takes them through the stages of the artist's life. At his deathbed, Schiele draws the portrait of the participants, which is handed over at the end. The project by Gerda Leopold and Sebastian Endler (Amilux Film) was created over the course of two years of production and can be experienced at the Egon Schiele Museum throughout the 2025 season.

Elisabeth Leopold - Unpublished InterviewsIn March 2022, Christian Bauer conducted interviews with Elisabeth Leopold, the wife of Rudolf Leopold. These conversations focus on important contemporary witnesses and companions of Egon Schiele who experienced and accompanied Elisabeth and Rudolf Leopold in the 1950s and 1960s. Many of these interview passages on Schiele's sister-in-law Adele Harms, older sister Melanie Schiele and others will be presented for the first time ever in the 2025 season of the Egon Schiele Museum.
